Local, regional, and over-the-road
Those words describe how often a driver is away from home. They are not a national mile limit on this page. Ask the carrier, in writing, how many nights the job spends away, which miles are paid, and what happens to pay during waiting or loading. A higher advertised rate can cover fewer paid miles.
What a new CDL holder still has to match
BLS says heavy and tractor-trailer drivers usually have a high school diploma, attend a truck driving school, and must have a CDL. State rules set the knowledge test, the skills test, and the age for the license, including intrastate work. This page does not state an age. Read how to get a CDL and how to become a truck driver.
The handbook also summarizes federal hours limits for long-haul drivers: no more than 14 consecutive hours on duty, including up to 11 hours of driving, then at least 10 hours off; and no more than 60 hours of driving in 7 days or 70 hours in 8 days before a 34-hour restart. That is the handbook’s summary, checked October 29, 2026. Confirm the current rule with FMCSA before you treat it as the regulation.
State estimates
May 2025 OEWS wage-and-salary estimates for heavy and light truck drivers are on a page for each state and the District of Columbia. They are not the handbook’s national totals, and they are not job openings. Company counts from the FMCSA Motor Carrier Census are not printed. A count of companies would not be a count of openings.

Are the projected openings jobs I can apply for today?
No. BLS projects about 214,500 openings a year, on average, for heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers from 2025 to 2035. Many replace people who leave the occupation. That is not a live job list.
