Texas CDL practice test

This page is study material. It is not the Texas state exam, and it does not copy state test questions. Check the official Texas pages below before you test.

The Texas DPS application page, opened October 29, 2026, lists the knowledge exams and the order they are taken. It does not print how many questions are on any of them. The same is true of the June 1, 2026 notice that the exams are in English only. This site does not supply a Texas question count.

Effective June 1, 2026, every CDL and commercial learner permit knowledge exam is in English. Interpreters are prohibited. The skills test, including pre-trip, basic control, and the road test, was already in English only.

The knowledge exams are taken in this order: Texas Commercial Rules, general knowledge, combination for Class A only, air brakes if they apply, then endorsements.

A first commercial learner permit does not require entry-level driver training. That training is required before the skills test, and before the knowledge test for a new hazardous-materials endorsement.

Texas Transportation Code section 522.014, as cited by DPS, requires the permit to be held at least 14 days before the road test. The applicant brings the commercial vehicle.

The handbook is free on the DPS site. The application page does not print the knowledge-test dollar amount.

Federal study sets, not the Texas exam

Use general knowledge, air brakes, combination vehicles, and hazmat to study the federal topics. Finishing one of those sets does not mean you passed the Texas test.
