How to get a CDL in Indiana

- Minimum age
- The Indiana-specific CDL manual says an applicant must be at least 18. Interstate commerce, or a school-bus application, requires at least 21.
- CLP fee
- The Bureau of Motor Vehicles fee chart, revised January 1, 2026, lists a commercial learner’s permit at $17. The manual says the applicant pays all required fees. A commercial learner’s permit is valid for one year.
- CDL fee
- The same chart lists a commercial driver’s license at $35. Adding or removing a CDL endorsement is $19. The chart does not split those amounts by class.
- Skills-test fee
- The manual says the applicant is responsible for the CDL skills test fee and, if applicable, the truck rental fee. It does not print either dollar. The January 1, 2026 fee chart does not list a skills-test line. The applicant must hold the commercial learner’s permit 14 days before the skills test, and appointments must be scheduled at least two days in advance. The test may be taken once a business day. Results are valid for one year.
- ELDT
- Before the CDL, the manual says the applicant must complete entry-level driver training with an FMCSA training provider and watch an instructional video on recognizing, preventing, and reporting human trafficking. It does not state an hour minimum.
- Medical card
- A valid medical examiner’s certificate must be on file with the BMV. The manual says the certified examiner uploads it to the National Registry so it can apply to the BMV system, and a current certificate must stay on file to retain commercial driving privileges. An intrastate-only restricted CDL holder must also keep a current completed certificate on file with the BMV.
