CDL training cost in Illinois
License fees and school charges are different bills. The fee lines below are copied from the Illinois licensing source opened . They are not a tuition estimate, and they are not added together into one “total cost.”
License fees on the official page
- CLP fee
- 625 ILCS 5/6-118 sets a commercial learner’s permit at $50 when it is issued to a person who holds a valid Illinois driver’s license in order to change to a CDL classification. That $50 is $6 for the CDLIS/AAMVAnet/NMVTIS Trust Fund, $20 for the Motor Carrier Safety Inspection Fund, and $24 for the CDL classification. A permit issued to a person who already holds a valid Illinois CDL, to change a classification, endorsement, or restriction, is $5.
- CDL fee
- The same section sets an original or renewal commercial driver’s license at $60. That total is $6 for the CDLIS/AAMVAnet/NMVTIS Trust Fund, $20 for the Motor Carrier Safety Inspection Fund, $10 for the driver’s license, and $24 for the CDL. A duplicate or corrected CDL is $5. The Secretary of State may prorate the $24 CDL portion to the expiration date of the applicant’s Illinois driver’s license. No additional fee is charged for a CDL issued to the holder of an instruction permit for the same classification who becomes eligible for that license.

Named program charges
No school in Illinois has a program charge reprinted here. A directory listing is not a price. Ask the school for a written quote for the class, location, and schedule you want.

Questions drivers ask
How much does CDL training cost in Illinois?
This page does not publish a statewide tuition. The license amounts are the lines on the official fee source checked October 29, 2026. A school price appears only when a named program page was already checked, and that price is not a quote for another school.
Are the Illinois license fees the whole bill?
No. A permit, a license card, a skills test, a medical exam, and a school charge are different payments. If one of those lines was missing from the licensing page, it is not filled in from another state.
Does a directory listing include the price?
No. A listing in the Illinois school directory is not a tuition quote and not a funded seat.
